Kalamkari - Tale of River Washed & Sun Kissed Fabrics

Kalamkari is an intricate fabric printing technique that originated in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh over 3,000 years ago. This traditional method uses only natural dyes derived from various roots, leaves, and mineral salts such as iron, tin, copper, and alum, involving a detailed process of twenty-three steps.

During one part of the process, the fabrics are washed in river water. The natural minerals found in flowing river water interact with the dyes, helping to bleach the uncolored areas of the fabric while fixing the colors in the dyed sections. This washing process also removes any excess dye and mordants.

As a result of the unique interaction between the natural minerals in the river water and the dyes, the colors become brighter, more vibrant, and longer-lasting.

However, there are environmental concerns associated with these practices. While the natural dyes do not harm the river water, some artisans use metallic mordants and synthetic colorants that can contaminate it. At HoliFab, we ensure that all our fabrics are lab-tested for the presence of any metallic pollutants and adhere to strict quality control measures to prevent any contribution to environmental pollution.
