Ikat - One Weave - Many Cultures - Neolithic Origins
Ikat is a traditional weaving technique that is both complex and requires significant skill and patience. Before weaving begins, the pattern is predetermined. Expert artisans meticulously align yarns of different colors to create a design that emerges as the weaving progresses.
A distinctive characteristic of Ikat is the slight haziness in the patterns, which is often valued by textile collectors for its unique appeal. This technique is believed to have originated in Indonesia and dates back to the Neolithic age (between 10,000 BCE and 2,000 BCE). Over time, it has influenced various countries and cultures around the world. Today, Ikat is prevalent in regions such as Cambodia, Thailand, Iran, Latin America, India, and Uzbekistan.
